Chair of Trustees

Are you passionate about supporting the mental health and well-being of dancers and performing artists?

STEPPS is seeking a dedicated individual to lead its committed Board of Trustees. You will be taking over from the existing Chair who has established the charity along Charity Commission guidelines with a Business Plan and Case for Financial Support for fundraising in place. STEPPS is starting to deliver its objectives and is well placed for growth and strategic implementation of its vision under a new Chair.

About STEPPS
A charity committed to providing vital resources, support, and advocacy for dancers and performing artists, helping them navigate the unique challenges of their careers while prioritising mental health and well-being.

The role

As Chair, you will:

  • Champion our mission, driving the charity’s growth and impact.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to assist in secure funding and build partnerships and sustainability.
  • Support and mentor trustees and the charity’s CEO to build an effective team.

We welcome applicants who:

  • Share our passion for the performing arts and mental health.
  • Bring experience in governance, leadership and strategy.
  • Can commit time and energy to advancing goals.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, with at least three years of experience as a chair of a charity, who can offer unique perspectives and experiences that can help us better serve our beneficiaries.

Time commitment
The role is voluntary, with an expected commitment of at least 10 hours per month, including quarterly board meetings and occasional events. The Board meets online but if necessary reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

How to apply
If you’re ready to lead STEPPS into its next exciting chapter, please send your CV and a brief statement of interest to stepps.charity@gmail.com with “Chair” in the subject, by the 31st March 2025. Volunteer Treasurer Trustee – STEPPS CIO

Help us support the mental wellbeing of dancers across the UK.

STEPPS is a UK registered charity dedicated to improving mental health and wellbeing support for dancers. We believe that mental health deserves the same attention and care as physical health throughout a dancer’s training and professional career.

We provide access to affordable and free therapeutic support, alongside workshops and educational initiatives designed to help dancers, dance schools and companies develop a healthier approach to mental wellbeing.

We are now looking for a volunteer Treasurer Trustee to join our Board and help guide the charity’s financial management as we continue to grow.

Who are we looking for?

We would welcome applications from individuals with bookkeeping, accounting or financial management experience who would like to use their knowledge and skills to support a worthwhile cause.

Knowledge of charity accounting would be helpful, although it is not essential. Previous experience as a charity trustee would also be an advantage, but we are equally interested in hearing from people who would like to take on their first trustee appointment.

You do not need to have a background in dance or the performing arts. An interest in mental health and a willingness to contribute to our charity’s development are what matter.

What would the role involve?

Working alongside our CEO and fellow trustees, you would help oversee the financial wellbeing of STEPPS. Your responsibilities would include:

  • Supporting accurate financial record-keeping and bookkeeping.
  • Monitoring income, expenditure and the charity’s financial position.
  • Preparing or overseeing financial reports for Board meetings.
  • Helping develop budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Supporting the preparation of annual accounts and financial information required by the Charity Commission.
  • Advising fellow trustees on financial matters and contributing to the charity’s overall governance and future planning.

As a trustee, you would also participate in Board discussions and decisions, helping STEPPS achieve its charitable objectives.

Time commitment and location

This is a voluntary, unpaid position, with flexible working arrangements and Board meetings held online.

The role can be undertaken remotely from within the UK, making it suitable for someone who would like to contribute their professional experience alongside other commitments.

Why join STEPPS?

This is an opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of those in UK’s dance community, many of whom face considerable psychological challenges during their training, professional careers and transitions out of dance.

You would join a small, committed team working to make mental health support more accessible within the dance community, while helping to shape the future of a developing charity.

Interested?

We would be delighted to hear from you.

Please email stepps.charity@gmail.com, telling us a little about your financial experience and why you would be interested in joining STEPPS.

Please use the subject line Treasurer Trustee – STEPPS.

An informal online conversation can be arranged to discuss the role and answer any questions.
